About this audiobook
In this breakout standalone novel of suspense in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on a Train, a woman agrees to help an old boyfriend who has been framed for murder—but begins to suspect that she is the one being manipulated.
And look for Alafair Burke’s latest heart-racing novel of psychological suspense, The Wife, coming in January 2018.
Twenty years ago she ruined his life. Now she has the chance to save it.
Widower Jack Harris has resisted the dating scene ever since the shooting of his wife Molly by a fifteen-year-old boy three years ago. An early morning run along the Hudson River changes that when he spots a woman in last night’s party dress, barefoot, enjoying a champagne picnic alone, reading his favorite novel. Everything about her reminds him of what he used to have with Molly. Eager to help Jack find love again, his best friend posts a message on a popular website after he mentions the encounter. Days later, that same beautiful stranger responds and invites Jack to meet her in person at the waterfront. That’s when Jack’s world falls apart.
Olivia Randall is one of New York City’s best criminal defense lawyers. When she hears that her former fiancé, Jack Harris, has been arrested for a triple homicide—and that one of the victims was connected to his wife’s murder—there is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame him—and why?
For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, to absolve herself of guilt from a tragic decision, a secret she has held for twenty years. But as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts. The man she knew could not have done this. But what if she never really knew him?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 I loved this book. It moves at a great pace, it kept me engaged the whole way through and threw in a few twists. I would highly recommend this book.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 8, 2023 I loved the story ...but... the narrator's voice and all the male voices that she did were quite annoying. She always seems to trail off on the last word no matter what part she was reading for. The voice of Don, was the absolute worse ...like nails on a chalkboard cringe worthy. It often sounded like someone mocking someone else, not someone narrating a story.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Sep 8, 2023 Ugh, somehow made me care about absolutely none of the characters1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jul 18, 2024 As a critic of thrillers and suspense books, this is definitely one of my favourite novels.
The main character was great, flawed but super smart and interesting. The ending was shocking… loved it!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Oct 25, 2023 The entire book was great. XE Sands has really improved her narrating!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 Loved It! Took me awhile to figure out who did it, but the reveal was worth the read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 8, 2023 This was a good audiobook to listen to while driving and on my daily walks/ kayaks. Nothing too taxing and the narrator did a very good job. I liked the characters and their realistic flaws, no super exceptional perfect humans, just realistic characters which appealed to me. If you if you read or listen to a lot of crime or mystery books you will likely "see" the twist coming . Before it was halfway through I figured out the end , just not how they were going to get there exactly....so I continued to listen to see if I was right and because it was not difficult to listen to. Overall it was a good story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 8, 2023 I honestly kept thinking that Jack did it to frame Olivia for her infidelity but towards the end I had a battle between Buckley & Jack being the suspect. Overall, it was a whirlwind of a book. Loved it!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 8, 2023 Saw the end coming a few chapters too soon, but still a fun read. and beautifully performed!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 8, 2023 This book was entertaining but it was also slightly predictable.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Sep 8, 2023 The recording skipped among the chapters at random. 30 minutes in, the last paragraph played and I knew the ending. So frustrating!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 8, 2023 Predictable but entertaining while I painted all weekend. Nothing that is going to blow your mind.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 8, 2023 So good I couldn’t stop listening. I can’t get enough of this author.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 8, 2023 An entertaining listen. Predictable though. Very predictable. I wish it would have proved my prediction wrong, I would have enjoyed the ending better.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 8, 2023 Enjoyed the audiobook, it was a good but slightly predictable plot line, a whodunit
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Sep 8, 2023 This book was so slow. I made it halfway wondering when the excitement would start, and it never did. It had the potential to be so much better.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 Hmm this author.. this is my second book and this one did not diss appoint. Going to get another. I really liked Charlotte and would totally be friends with her and Olivia ..
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 With Burke you know most likely there will be a twist but this one did surprise me.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 The definitive thriller. Usually have some measure of disappointment when finishing a thriller, poor character development or some part of the plot appeared to implausible. Not the case here. Kudos Ms Burke!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 Loved the story and the connections. Xe is the best narrator ever.❤️
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 8, 2023 Its an interesting book to listen to while doing chores. Above average. The story is slow though and not mind blowing.
The narrators impersonation of voices wasn’t great either.
I think Burke did a good job with the Ex’s character and that suspense kept me going.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 I had a hard time not listening to this book! What a fun thriller, I loved the way things slowly unrolled. I guessed towards the end who was the killer. I enjoyed the narrators character voices
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 The book got straight to the point!!! Was an amazing read!!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 8, 2023 I enjoyed the story a lot. I listen to audiobooks to keep me awake during my commute and this was just what I was looking for. Interesting but easy to follow and a little predictable. My only issue is the narrator. Her inflection is weird, she sounds almost bored And as another reviewer pointed out, she gets almost inaudible at the end of pretty much every other sentence. I have to blast the book and can still barely hear her when she starts to trail off.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 Loved this book, and narrator was great! Highly reccomend, quick listen
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 8, 2023 Predictable, I felt let down when I finished this book
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sep 8, 2023 A complex legal thriller. There are plenty of unexpected twists and turns to the very last page.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Sep 8, 2023 I don’t know if it’s fair to review, as I could not get through the first hour of it - the dictation of the narrator was atrocious I could not handle it! Her sentences all ended in a bored sound and I could not get over it. It’s a bummer, too, because I wanted to listen to this one.2 people found this helpful
