Tropicália

Termo perigoso de recuperar. É como invocar forças ocultas, um fantasma que há muito deixou de rondar o mundo (e as economias). Em 1967, subdesenvolvimento era um conceito em pleno viço, disparado a torto e a direito. Mas o meio século que se seguiu lhe foi cruel. Até seu contraponto, o desenvolvimento, foi sequestrado por programas de governo agressivos, autoritários, destrutivos. O subdesenvolvimento desapareceu do vocabulário e só emerge, eventualmente, com sentido pejorativo. O conceito foi esconjurado e enterrado. Em economia, virou nota de rodapé. Recuperar a história do subdesenvolvimento, da ascensão à esconjuração, lança uma estranha luz sobre o destino do próprio desenvolvimento, hoje sufocado pela assimilação ao industrialismo anacrônico e à supressão de modos de vida tradicionais. O destino da noção de subdesenvolvimento permite perguntar: o que fazer do desenvolvimento? * O subdesenvolvimento exumado revela uma estranha potência. Embora tenha se tornado um jargão batido, o termo parece dotado da capacidade de embaralhar lógicas. A começar pela teoria econômica, em que a ideia de que algo possa ser subdesenvolvido contém uma dose de afirmação que destoa clamorosamente da arquitetura em que se insere a noção ortodoxa de desenvolvimento. Classicamente, qualquer estado que não seja o pleno desenvolvimento das forças produtivas é um defeito de desenvolvimento, que acomete toda economia incapaz de aceder às tecnologias de ponta. É um defeito do capital, que tende a ser consertado na medida em que o capital plenamente desenvolvido investe nas regiões atrasadas, elevando sua produtividade. O capital que sobra no centro, onde o retorno é menor porque a concorrência é acirrada, promove nas periferias, onde o retorno é maior, o fechamento do vão de renda. Esse raciocínio remete às emanações de Plotino: o capital é como um Absoluto em relação ao qual os demais entes acumulam imperfeição; é das emanações do capital (plenamente desenvolvido) que as economias atrasadas obtêm sua parte no ser, isto é, na produtividade. A afirmação da positividade do subdesenvolvimento, como um verdadeiro estado de coisas, atinge essa concepção com uma violência que, no decurso das teorias do crescimento, no contexto neoclássico em economia, foi explosiva. Afirmar a relação necessária das duas condições, desenvolvido e subdesenvolvido, inviabiliza esse quadro, que passa a parecer ingênuo ou mistificador: não existe "recuperação do atraso", quando a condição não é de atraso, mas de ocupação de um espaço real, positivo, embora subordinado e empobrecido.

Resumo: O presente artigo faz parte do projeto de pesquisa sobre o rock progressivo no Brasil, desenvolvido no programa de pós-graduação em música da Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina (UDESC). A discussão envolve a relação da contracultura na segunda metade dos anos de 1960 com o nascimento do rock progressivo na Inglaterra e o surgimento da Tropicália no Brasil, suas relações políticas e experimentações musicais.

O presente trabalho tem como propósito relacionar o objeto da cultura com a análise econômica a partir da metodologia do materialismo histórico marxista e do conceito de indústria cultural de Adorno e Horkheimer. Adoto como recorte a movimentação cultural tropicalista na MPB e o padrão de desenvolvimento econômico brasileiro com base, a priori , na substituição de importações de bens de consumo duráveis: de JK ao “milagre econômico” . Tendo em vista o processo de industrialização como elemento chave no debate do desenvolvimentismo no Brasil, considero o campo da cultura, no bojo de uma mesma economia burguesa, parte integrante desse processo. Assim, no primeiro capítulo, a metodologia teórica de Marx e o pensamento da Escola de Frankfurt são apresentados. No capítulo dois, trabalho o percurso de desenvolvimento da economia brasileira a partir de JK e o debate teórico a respeito do caráter emancipatório ou dependente da industrialização brasileira no bojo da economia internacional. Em seguida, discuto a partir da visão de Roberto Schwarz, Carlos Nelson Coutinho, Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda e Marcos Gonçalves, o conteúdo e o posicionamento político da Tropicália no esteio da indústria cultural no Brasil. Por fim, ressaltarei o elemento contraditório do Tropicalismo em comum com o padrão de acumulação da economia brasileira.

Esse artigo é parte do projeto de pesquisa que pretende observar em gêneros de nossa música popular massiva - funk, sertanejo e axé - agenciamentos políticos caros a questões de comportamento e de estética musical. Partindo de um artigo de Vladimir Safatle e de recente entrevista de Caetano Veloso, faremos uma reflexão em torno da relação produção musical e política nos dias de hoje vis-à-vis o atual estágio de desenvolvimento das novas tecnologias de comunicação. Se de um lado o filósofo classifica os três gêneros como “fim da música” e, de outro, o cantor popular os exalta como uma “Tropicália” ainda inexplorada, justificamos esta reflexão pela ambivalência do objeto em estudo.

Este artigo tem como principal objetivo discutir o fenômeno da performance musical a partir de uma imbricação de conceitos pertinentes à música, à antropologia e aos estudos de gênero e sexualidade. Defendendo a ideia de que a cantora Gal Costa desenvolveu um discurso performático-vocal e corporal-devidamente afinado aos propósitos tropicalistas, analiso as possibilidades de uso do  corpo para a produção de imagens performáticas que incitam ao debate  acerca das possíveis intersecções entre música, erotismo e sexualidade. Ao dialogar com a obra de autores como Clifford Geertz, Terence Turner, Mary Douglas, Marcel Mauss, Judith Butler e George Bataille, pretendo contribuir com uma revisão crítica do Tropicalismo na qual a interpretação musical e as técnicas corporais ocupam o centro da discussão. A intenção é propor uma problematização das subjetividades envolvidas no processo de construção performática que é fabricado no corpo do cantor.

"I'm a 'gogoia' fruit, I'm a lass": Gal Costa and the Tropicalismo in the feminine

This study aims at discussing the phenomenon of musical performance considering an overlap of relevant concepts from music, anthropology and gender and sexuality studies. Departing from the idea that Brazilian singer Gal Costa developed a performative discourse-vocal and corporal-properly tuned to the tropicalistas purposes, I analyze the possibilities of using the body to  produce performative images that brings up the discussion about the possible intersections between music, eroticism and sexuality. In a dialogue with the work of authors such as Clifford Geertz, Terence Turner, Mary Douglas, Marcel Mauss, Juduth Butler and Georg Bataille, I hope to contribute to a critical review of Tropicalismo, in wich the musical interpretation and corporal techniques occupy the center of the discussion. The objective is to propose a debate about the subjectivity involved in the performative process that is fabricated on the singer's body.

Resumo: Este artigo tem como estudo de caso a influência dos Beatles na Tropicália. Aborda o êxito que o movimento teve na sociedade brasileira e a recepção dos Beatles no país. Os fatos, os quais foram baseados para a construção do artigo, foram fundamentados através de pesquisa, acontecimentos históricos, depoimentos e recursos bibliográficos. O objetivo foi identificar os elementos da mensagem dos Beatles influenciando a Tropicália.

In this dissertation, I examine the work of Rogério Duprat as arranger for tropicalista songs and the way some of his musical arrangements dialog with the melodized words with which they were recorded in the late 1960s. As a mix of orchestral sounds, film music cliches, and sound effects, Duprat’s arrangements give an audiovisual character to tropicalista recordings. As an experienced composer of serial, electroacoustic, computer, and advertising music, as well as theater and cinema soundtracks, Duprat employed his broad knowledge of Western concert music and Brazilian popular music in order to make audio references to diverse works and music styles interwoven into his arrangements. As a craftsman, he sought to understand and to answer the demands from song composers, singers, the record company producer, recording technicians, and other professionals that became collaborators of his arrangements. His arrangements were also influenced by agents such as John Cage, The Beatles, the concrete poets, and the composers, conductors and musicians of Música Nova, a São Paulo avant-garde group that was integrated by Duprat and the other arrangers for tropicalista songs.

Quando a Tropicália irrompeu na cena musical em 1967, Mário Pedrosa era um crítico de arte influente. Em 1966, ao constatar o esgotamento da arte moderna, Pedrosa afirma que um novo ciclo cultural se iniciava - o da arte pós-moderna. Reconstruindo esse conceito, investigaremos se a intervenção de Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil no III Festival de Música Popular Brasileira pode ser considerada uma manifestação do pós-modernismo. A hipótese é que os motivos da arte pós-moderna identificados por Pedrosa estão presentes na Tropicália.

When Tropicalia emerged in the music scene in 1967, Mario Pedrosa was an influential art critic. In 1966, when he realized the burnout of modern art, Pedrosa claims that a new cultural cycle was beginning – the postmodern art. Reconstructing this concept, we will investigate if the intervention of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in the III Festival de Musica Popular Brasileira (Brazilian  Popular  Music  Festival  III)  can  be  considered  a  manifestation  of  postmodernism.  The hypothesis is that the elements of postmodern art identified by Pedrosa are present in Tropicalia.

O trabalho se propõe a analisar como os Secos e Molhados, através de sua performance ousada se propuseram a resistir aos dispositivos que buscam regular o sensível. Para isso busca delinear suas influências como a Tropicália, o Expressionismo e a Androginia, para a construção de um corpo exótico, cuja máscara possibilitou a construção de um personagem híbrido, de rosto alvo e olhar negro provocativo, com dorso nu e saias flutuantes, adornada de plumas, colares e purpurina, capaz de transgredir a censura.

On this work, I propose an analysis of the “tropicalista” song recording “Não identificado” [“Unidentified”] by Gal Costa (1969), focusing on the dialogue between the sung words and the musical arrangement by Rogério Duprat. A reverent parody of ballads by Brazilian rock singer-composer Roberto Carlos, the song presents itself as a platonic love message transported by a disc, which is launched simultaneously as a LP and a flying saucer. Traveling through an idyllic Brazilian sky, as it is described on traditional romantic Brazilian popular song, this unidentified flying object blurs the limit between physic-objective and metaphysic-subjective realms. Aware about the ambiguity of an “unidentified” song, Duprat dilutes the boundary that separates music arrangement and soundscape, introducing sounds heard on American sci-fi movies from the 1950s. This sonic trip, however, goes beyond soundscapes inhabited by aliens, simulating at the same time a psychedelic flight that suggests a fusion between the self and the world, as it is experienced in the late 1960s by LSD users. Through this analysis, I aim to discuss the importance of the arranger and of the musical arrangement in the definition of recorded song meanings, recognizing, the symbolic power of music and sound in a specific historical and cultural context.

Fifty years ago, a controversy shook the world of culture and the concepts of politics, mixing the direction of MPB, the cultural market and the insertion of Brazil into the global scenario.

After Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil performed at the 1967 MPB Festival, there was a change in Brazilian culture. From 1966 to 1968, Mário Pedrosa outlined in his Correio da Manhã columns what he understood by postmodernism by analyzing contemporary visual  arts.  Despite  the  contemporaneity  between Tropicália and Pedrosa, his analysis is not used to understand the intervention of the two musicians in the Brazilian culture of  the  1960s.  Thus,  we  will  reconstruct  Pedrosa’s concept to investigate Tropicália as  a  manifestation  of  postmodernism  in  the  periphery.

Após Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil se apresentarem no Festival de MPB, de 1967, evidenciou-se uma mudança na cultura brasileira. De 1966 a 1968, Mário Pedrosa delineava em suas colunas do Correio da Manhã o que entendia por pós-modernismo analisando as artes visuais contemporâneas. Apesar da contemporaneidade entre a Tropicália e Pedrosa, a análise dele não é usada para compreender a intervenção dos dois músicos na cultura brasileira dos anos 1960. Assim, reconstruiremos o conceito de Pedrosa para investigar a Tropicália enquanto uma manifestação do pós-modernismo na periferia.

A wave of Brazilian artists has been building for over a decade an innovative trend of music composition and production, while creating new artistic networks via social medias and digital technology. Most importantly, these new "tropicalistas," musicians, dancers, poets and actors, are addressing issues of race, gender and homophobia in Brazil1. By developing regional and trans-national communication through both globalization and "glocalization,2" this new artistic current is challenging the status quo in Brazil in several ways, among which is promoting non-commercial circuits of distribution. Inspired by the Tropicália movement of the 1960s, they have developed an informal but very coherent Brazilian Avant Garde (in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Recife) which is largely ignored by the Brazilian media and still unknown to most of the global academic world.

Em junho de 2013, data da maior erupção social das últimas décadas, o movimento Black Bloc ganhou os holofotes como nova prática de luta e manifestação. Analistas à direita e à esquerda foram forçados a tentar compreender o movimento, normalmente municiando um repertório conceitual incompatível com os significados do Black Bloc, sem entendê-lo em seus próprios termos. Procurando suprir essa carência surge o "Filosofia Black Bloc", que concebe e mobiliza um arcabouço teórico que permita abordar o movimento Black Bloc como fenômeno: produzir, no pensamento, uma filosofia Black Bloc. Não cessamos de ler Junho sob o ponto de vista de Brasília, dos palácios de governo, dos partidos recusados pelas multidões, da surpresa e da inércia dos poderes constituídos, da decadência da representação formal, das classes cerradas para o social. Pensar Junho nesses termos torna-se então “capturar e destruir” sua potência específica. Não é por acaso que boa parte das interpretações de intelectuais se parece tanto com os discursos da grande imprensa que vimos circular.

O artigo faz uma análise do único registro em áudio (1968) do piauiense Torquato Neto, o qual aponta, em diálogo com o contexto experimental da Tropicália (Süssekind, 2007), um outro ponto de vista para repensar as criações e estudos ligados às culturas ditas populares, uma vez que tais manifestações são quase sempre circunscritas exclusivamente ao campo do Folclore. Partindo da relação entre local e global (Anjos, 2005) e do conceito de antropofagia como mecanismo de proposição de uma arte brasileira que incorporaria tanto os mitos estrangeiros quanto os nacionais, discute-se o projeto poético de, como diz Torquato, não folclorização do popular.

This paper aims to introduce and analyze the Tom Zé's perspective on Tropicalia, which featured in his 2012 album Tropicalia lixo lógico. Firstly, we highlight two important characteristics of Brazilian popular music, which help us to understand the possibility of a disc-thesis. Besides being defined as “dialogues field” (1), the Brazilian popular music has a “mesh of permeabilities”, which means that high culture intersects with popular productions, resulting in “lightness” (2). On his album, Tom Zé not only becomes the protagonist of the interpretation of Tropicalia, but also shifts the anthropophagy from the interpretive center of this Brazilian artistic and cultural manifestation. In this sense, we understand the album (in their physicals and symbolics aspects) taking into consideration the Walter Moser’scultural recycling, once Tom Zé includes “scraps” and “waste” in the cultural and artistic space. Moreover, from the recycling of the logical waste, the hegemonic space incorporates cultural materials from other origins, placing them into dialogue.

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar e analisar a tese de Tom Zé sobre a Tropicália, presente em seu disco Tropicália lixo lógico, lançado em 2012. Primeiramente, destacam-se duas características importantes da música popular brasileira, que ajudam a entender a possibilidade de um disco-tese: além de ser definida como um “campo dialogal” (1), a música popular brasileira é dotada de uma “malha de permeabilidades”, pelo modo como a alta cultura se cruza com produções populares, tendo como resultado a “leveza” (2). Em seu álbum, Tom Zé não apenas assume o protagonismo da interpretação da Tropicália, mas, também, desloca a antropofagia do centro interpretativo dessa manifestação artística e cultural brasileira. Nesse sentido, o disco é compreendido, levando-se em conta tanto seus aspectos físicos quanto simbólicos, a partir do que Walter Moser denomina de reciclagem cultural, uma vez que Tom Zé processa a inclusão de “restos” e “dejetos” no espaço cultural e artístico. Ademais, com a reciclagem do lixo lógico, o espaço hegemônico incorpora materiais culturais de outras procedências, colocando-os em diálogo.

Abstract (English)

Influenced by the 1960’s vanguard movement of Tropicália, Itamar Assumpção became a leader of the so-called Vanguarda Paulista. He offered a new critique of the establishment while taking part in an independent DIY scene. This critique took the form of a detached and ironic narrative voice, and the exploration and reimagining of Samba and Pan-Africanism through polyphony and dissonance. Assumpção stands out as
someone who was able to generate a new synthesis of Pan-African traditions and the Brazilian Popular Song tradition. Though today there’s a current generation of musicians from São Paulo who are influenced by Assumpção, he still remains largely unknown in Brazil and the rest of the world. I analyze selected pieces from his discography by looking at his lyrics and compositional procedures in order to demonstrate a vast scope of artistic thought that utilized influences from contemporary theater to Reggae.

Influenciado pelo movimento de vanguarda da Tropicália, em 1960, Itamar Assumpção tornou-se líder da chamada Vanguarda Paulista. Ele ofereceu uma nova crítica ao establishment enquanto participava de uma cena independente. Essa crítica tomou a forma de uma voz narrativa irônica e desapegada, e a exploração e releitura do samba e do pan-africanismo através da polifonia e da dissonância. Assumpção destaca-se como alguém capaz de gerar uma nova síntese das tradições pan-africanas e da tradição da Canção Popular Brasileira. Embora haja uma geração atual de músicos de São Paulo influenciados por Assumpção, ele ainda permanece em grande parte desconhecido no Brasil e no resto do mundo. Analiso peças selecionadas de sua discografia, observando suas letras e procedimentos de composição, a fim de demonstrar um vasto campo de pensamento artístico que utilizou influências desde o teatro contemporâneo até o Reggae.

This paper deals with the updating of Tropi­calia in the field of cultural policies with the arrival of Gilberto Gil at the Ministry of Culture in 2003. From the recovery of a tropicalista identity in his public stance, the musician­-manager did emerge reflections on a “tropicalista way” of thinking about culture. Thus, we intend to understand which elements present in Gilberto Gil’s management indicate a survival of Tropicalia in contemporary times. Without losing sight of the semantic instability of this Brazilian artis­tic and cultural manifestation, we prefer the path that points to the rupture character and to the utopian possibilities of this sign. We realize, finally, in this ap­proach, a notion of culture that takes into account the digital, the creativity of multitude, the difference, an­d also calls into the question a hegemonic and univo­cal model of Brazil.

Este artigo examina a migração de procedimentos de colagem na obra de José Agrippino de Paula. Partindo da definição da colagem na Pop Art e de sua politização no contexto do Tropicalismo e da cultura brasileira dos anos 1960-70, realizamos uma análise dos
traços comuns à literatura (Lugar Público, 1964), ao teatro (Rito do Amor Selvagem, 1968) e ao cinema (Hitler III Mundo, 1968) deste multi-artista experimental.

In this article I propose to conceive music as a sonic object that, different from visual art forms, has its own ways of moving through time and space. Through the analysis of the song “Aquele abraço,” written in 1969 by the Brazilian musician and performer Gilberto Gil, I will focus on how he narrates an experience, which, I argue, is affectively diasporic. This means that the sense of alienation from the homeland is not exclusively related to a physical separation, but also to the affective induction of this experience. Departing from the notions of Brian Massumi and those of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari about the nature and the experience of affect, I will explore how affect also emerges as an intensity circulating between bodies, which I relate to resonance and harmonic musical representation. This allows me to reflect on the dwelling in multiple worlds that is presented in the song’s narration, as well as on its layering of performative characteristics that interact with the listener on an affective level.

The aim of the research is to comprehend and analyze the Tropicália movement under the anthropological perspective of the bodily and performatic uses. To do that, a historical and cultural contextualization of the circumstances that created the movement is discussed in the first chapter, within the political and dictatorial context, as well as the artistic innovations of the moment. In addition, the plural spaces and the cultural and artistic movements that contributed to the conception of Tropicália are presented so the formation of a new cultural identity can be understood. The second chapter includes the most theoretical fragment of the study, presenting some perspectives inside the Anthropology of the Body and of the Performance, discussing crucial authors such as Marcel Mauss, Paul Zumthor, Erving Goffman and David Le Breton, in an attempt to constantly dialogue with the movement and the visual arts of the 1960’s. Lastly, the third chapter analyzes the covers of the Long Plays (LPs), interviews and photografies from 1967 to 1973, exceeding the temporal duration of Tropicália, for it is important to comprehend the behavior and performative resonances in this short period of time after its dissolution. The objective of this chapter is based on applying the theories discussed in the second chapter inside the analysis of the empirical object. The method used in this study is the bibliographic revision of the theoretical and empirical material, with the documental and audiovisual sources, besides the iconographic and interviews analyzes.

One can say that the popular music recorded by Tropicália, the collaborative circle that emerged in late 1960s Brazil, can be called program music. In fact, some of the meanings attributed to it are in part suggested by the dialogue/tension of the sonic-musical contents with song lyrics and titles, record covers, and with other signifiers that work like programs, comparable to those of the 19th century symphonic poems. This work is on another program, which comes first and it is necessary to the signification of considerable part of Tropicália sonic and musical content. This is a "program for listening" , which, through fusions of arrangements and soundscapes, and through the simulation of acoustic augmented realities, has stimulated a subjective and perceptual reconfiguration of listening selves. The familiarization with such effects has afforded these listeners to recognize meanings on these Tropicália records that are not obvious to the uninitiated in the " program for listening " that these records capture and convey.

An intermedial experiment par excellence, Tropicália unleashed a
veritable artistic and political earthquake whose aftershocks can still be
felt today. An immediate response to the events of its day, Tropicália collected and made sense of the debris of the left-wing revolutionary utopia shattered by the military coup in Brazil in 1964. popular cultures, avant-garde and commercial practices, good and bad
taste. Most importantly, in relation to our approach, their outputs and
interventions recognized no frontiers between the established arts and
media but circulated freely across them.

A partir da análise do conteúdo crítico e antropofágico da narrativa midiática tropicalista, o artigo investiga se a estratégia de resistência ao imperialismo – a apropriação crítica e a ressignificação da cultura popular brasileira, por exemplo – pode ser considerada contra hegemônica, considerando-se o cenário da época, ou seja, a ditadura militar brasileira, os valores conservadores e o estágio do capitalismo no período. A proposta, com tal debate, é dialogar com outros trabalhos que focam este momento da cultura musical e midiática nacional, no sentido de um cotejo entre as várias formas de resistência e as questões que envolvem a dependência cultural. A hipótese que movimenta o trabalho é a percepção do caráter ambíguo do movimento musical baiano, em função de um jogo que não se furta à dominação da cultura pop estrangeira.

Based on the idea of contemporary cultural manifestations as hybrid cultures, this article aims at understanding how a sense of brazilianity is structured being equally hybrid, and uses Hélio Oiticica's work Tropicália (1967) for visual and aesthetic example. Interpreting popular culture as the result of the double movement of resisting and containing, and considering the changes suffered by the most traditional aspects of culture as well as the transformations resulting from them on the globalizing world and its technical and scientific environments, the legitimacy of the referred work of art as popular art is not approached. Instead, the installation is seen here as part of popular Brazilian culture, a manifestation able to reveal symbolic, political and cultural issues as well as illustrate a hybrid brazilianity under construction.

This paper presents the works of Rogério Duarte, graphic designer and one of the mentors of the Tropicália movement in Brazil. His last exhibit took place at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) of Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and concluded with a tribute concert given by renown musicians of Tropicália, such as Caetano Veloso, Moreno Veloso, Jorge Mautner  and Thiogo Duarte.

"Tropicália, Feminism And Myself" is a publication written by the artist and recently an MFA Fine Art graduate from the Kingston School of Art Gabriela Pitanga. The publication touches upon her studio practice, Afro-Latin American art and how the Tropicália movement has influenced her development as an artist.
