2000, Studies in Latin American Popular Culture
About how Tropicália became official culture, focusing especially on events in 1997 and 1998. Published in 2000. Honorable mention, 2001 Carlos and Guillermo Vigil Prize for innovative and groundbreaking analysis in a contribution to SLAPC the previous year. Versão em português: Capítulo 3 de Tropicália Rex: Música popular e cultura brasileira. Rio de Janeiro: Mauad, 2018.
A wave of Brazilian artists has been building for over a decade an innovative trend of music composition and production, while creating new artistic networks via social medias and digital technology. Most importantly, these new "tropicalistas," musicians, dancers, poets and actors, are addressing issues of race, gender and homophobia in Brazil1. By developing regional and trans-national communication through both globalization and "glocalization,2" this new artistic current is challenging the status quo in Brazil in several ways, among which is promoting non-commercial circuits of distribution. Inspired by the Tropicália movement of the 1960s, they have developed an informal but very coherent Brazilian Avant Garde (in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Recife) which is largely ignored by the Brazilian media and still unknown to most of the global academic world.
Proceedings of the 12th Art of Record Production Conference Mono: Stereo: Multi, 2019
The record production made in Colombia during the boom of danceable tropical music between the 1960s and the 1970s had a prominent transcendence in the historical development of the Colombian music industry. On the other hand, the phenomenon of tropical urban music of today is similar to that of more than 40 years ago, considering that the two moments take place mostly in the city of Medellín, and are more related to sociocultural situations than to the purely musicological ones. Thus, this paper aims to show the points of coincidence of both eras from the study of their record productions versus the commercial and sociocultural circumstances of these genres.
