Umfassende und detaillierte Auswertung des sog. Südwestquartier von Augusta Raurica welches die Regionen 4D, 4G, 5H und 5B sowie den zwischen diesen Regionen liegenden Abschnitt der Westtorstrasse beinhaltet. Die Nutzung des Areals beginnt ca. 10  n. Chr. mit Töpfereien, gefolgt von Streifenhäusern in Stein, die nach einer Ausbauphase schliesslich im späteren 3. Jahrhundert aufgeben werden. In der Folge wurde der Frage nach der Positionierung dieses Quartiers im Gesamtgefüge der römischen Stadt nachgegangen. Die Bebauungsstruktur entlang der Westtorstrasse muss im Vergleich zu anderen Gebieten im Umfeld der Oberstadt als überdurchschnittlich gelten. Als Ursachen für die individuelle Entwicklung des Südwestquartiers wurden verschiedene Möglichkeiten diskutiert. Im Weiteren wurde die Rolle der Westtorstrasse und ihre Einbindung in die Gesamtorganisation der Stadt analysiert. Hier wird zunächst der Stellenwert der Heiligtümer im Westen der Stadt zu diskutiert und den Entwicklungsrhythmen der Besiedlung entlang der Strasse gegenübergestellt.

Detailed analysis oft he so-called South-west quarter of Augusta Raurica encompassing regions 4D, 4G, 5H and 5B as well as the enclosed section of the Westtorstrasse. The settlement of the area starts around 10 AD with the operation of potteries followed by stone-built strip houses which were again superceded by a series of alterations and enlargement before the quarter was abandoned towards the end of the 3rd century AD. The position of this quarter – which must rank among upper town`s social standards as high - in the town`s layout is discussed. Further, reasons for this individual development were explored and set against the postulated importance of the Westtorstrasse within the city`s spacial organization. Finally, the role of the sacred precinct in the West of the city is looked into and compared to the perceived ebb and flow of building activity in the South-west quarter.

The collapse of the western Roman empire led to a long period of urban decline in western Europe. From about the 10th century onwards, however,  urban life revived.  Initially, this happened particularly in existing settlements – often in remnants of Roman cities, towns and
fortresses – that grew and were gradually promoted to towns and cities. But towns were also created anew, almost from scratch, in short periods of time. This became more and more usual as more and more landlords sought to profit from the urban boom. Unfortunately, little is known of how this was done. In the following chapter, various aspects of these new urban creations will be outlined in the perspective of the heritage of the ancient colonial city, beginning with a short introduction of the phenomenon and subsequently focusing on spatial planning and the grid plan in particular.

This paper aims at studying the tabernae of Alba Fucens in the context of the historical, urban and monumental develop-ment of the Latin colony. The tabernae were built in the late Republican period according to modular patterns and in relation with the central axes of the road network (via del Milario and via dei Pilastri) and were also located next to public buildings facing the Forum. As it has been shown by recent excavations, they underwent a series of structural and functional transformations, sometimes related to destructive events and subsequent reconstructions. This essay focuses on two main issues: a critical review of the old data; the discussion of the evidence from the new archaeological research, in particular that of the University of Foggia in the south-eastern area of the Forum.

The numerous publications which have been devoted to Philippopolis generally focus on studying single works of art and monuments, rather than on clearing up the urbanistic and historical problems which still undermine our comprehension of the city. The present paper precisely aims at tackling these general problems. It gathers the conclusions of two recent studies : a survey, mapmaking and restitution work, carried out in 1993-1994
by N. Darrous; an archaeological and historical synthesis combined with field researches, made by J. Rohmer in 2001-2002. The results allow a better understanding of the general design of the Roman city and provide new answers to some historical problems related to the site, such as the transition from the village to the city, Philippus Arabs' origins and the degree of development reached by Philippopolis after its foundation.

Riassunto · Questo articolo esplora alcuni aspetti del rap-porto città-territorio nell'Occidente romano, ed in Italia in particolare, con lo scopo di analizzare l'interazione e l'integra-zione tra le città ed i loro suburbi. L'arco cronologico è quello compreso tra l'epoca tardo-repubblicana e l'età imperiale. Nel-lo specifico, il lavoro intende riesaminare i fondamenti teorici e le questioni metodologiche correlate a questa ricerca, alla luce di un caso di studio dall'Italia adriatica centrale che serva anche da chiave per studiare olisticamente il rapporto tra città e cam-pagna. Le conclusioni ci porteranno a considerare le città ed i loro suburbi come unità, e ci chiariranno che studiarli nella loro complessità di 'paesaggi' ha delle implicazioni importanti per la comprensione della Romanità nel suo insieme.

Abstract · This paper explores aspects of the town-territory relationship in the Roman West, with a special focus on Italy, with the aim of assessing the interaction and integration of cities and their suburbia. The chronological focus is the Late Republic and Imperial age, with an emphasis on the period from the mid second century bc to the late second century ad. In particular, the paper aims to consider some of the theoretical foundations and methodological issues concerned, while we highlight by way of a case study from central-Adriatic Italy the archaeological practice of studying the nexus between town and countryside in a holistic way. The conclusions suggest that considering cities and their suburbia as single units and approaching them as landscapes has important implications for understanding the Roman world in general.

In the last decade integrated non-destructive survey methods have offered new possibilities for the identification and recording of buried archaeological sites, whilst reducing to the minimum destructive intervention and the cost of investigating large archaeological sites. Using the Roman site of Ammaia (Marvão, Portugal) as a case study, this paper discusses the ways in which the informative potential of archaeological datasets derived via multi-method surveys can be best exploited through the use of computational methodologies. The first part of the paper offers a brief account of how GIS-based data integration, data fusion, 3D reconstruction and visualisation have been used until now to enrich the interpretation of archaeological datasets collected at Ammaia. The second part discusses in more detail the yet largely unexplored potential of urban network analysis to enhance the interpretation of ancient street networks revealed with non-destructive survey methods, as well as some of the problems involved in the interpretive process.
