Genealogia jako nauka pomocnicza historii, rozszerzyła swój zakres. Wynikiem badań genealogicznych nie są już tylko dane osobowe przodków, ale także wiedza o czasach i miejscu, w których żyli. W powszechnym rozumieniu genealogia Żydów wydaje się trudnym tematem badań, gdyż panuje przekonanie, że wszystkie dokumenty zginęły bądź zostały zniszczone w czasie II wojny światowej. Istnieje jednak dużo materiałów, które mogą być doskonałym źródłem informacji. Również rozwój technologii (technik komputerowych, Internetu, biotechnologii) stał się czynnikiem rozwoju i popularyzacji badań genealogicznych.

The conception of the ahl al-bayt, "people of the house," "family," or "household" of the Prophet Muhammad plays a vital role in Islamic thought and piety. In the tashahhud portion of the ritual prayers, Muslims of all persuasions supplicate daily, "O God! Bless Muhammad and his family (al), as you blessed Abraham and his family." This article examines the notion of the ahl al-bayt in the Quran, the Prophetic tradition, and in Muslim thought spanning many geographical regions and time periods.

This study investigates early employments of family trees in the modern sciences, in order to historicise their iconic status and now established uses, notably in evolutionary biology and linguistics. Moving beyond disciplinary accounts to consider the wider cultural background, it examines how early uses within the sciences transformed family trees as a format of visual representation, as well as the meanings invested in them.

Historical writing about trees in the modern sciences is heavily tilted towards evolutionary biology, especially the iconic diagrams associated with Darwinism. Trees of Knowledge shifts the focus to France in the wake of the Revolution, when family trees were first put to use in a number of disparate academic fields. Through three case studies drawn from across the disciplines, it investigates the simultaneous appearance of trees in natural history, language studies, and music theory. Augustin Augier’s tree of plant families, Félix Gallet’s family tree of dead and living languages, and Henri Montan Berton’s family tree of chords served diverse ends, yet all exploited the familiar shape of genealogy.

While outlining how genealogical trees once constituted a more general resource in scholarly knowledge production—employed primarily as pedagogical tools—this study argues that family trees entered the modern sciences independently of the evolutionary theories they were later made to illustrate. The trees from post-revolutionary France occasionally charted development over time, yet more often they served to visualise organic hierarchy and perfect order. In bringing this neglected history to light, Trees of Knowledge provides not only a rich account of the rise of tree thinking in the modern sciences, but also a pragmatic methodology for approaching the dynamic interplay of metaphor, visual representation, and knowledge production in the history of science.

Genealogy is a multifaceted semantic field where the identity of noble families, founded upon history, is crafted and refined using chess strategy. Due to cultural and personal relations with the nobility of Western and Central Europe, common European collective consciousness influenced the nobility of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Terefore the study of the genealogical identity of the nobility of the GDL, which is understood as self-identification of nobles in terms of genealogy within the context of their lives and times, knowledge among nobles about their ancestors and how this knowledge served to construct identity issignificant from the regional as well as local perspective. Genealogical consciousness and memory are important linchpins upon which hinges a socio-politico-cultural mechanism of vast extent, in which members of privileged social groups vie for position. The memory or ‘discovery’ of ancestors, and especially the selection of forefathers according to criteria dictated by personal ambition, paint a genealogical portrait of the family which was hung in the common portrait gallery, so to speak, of the groups of nobles.
In preparing the thesis about genealogical consciousness of the nobility of the GDL and its reflections in the heraldry of the 16th–18th century (20 families were investigated), visual and written sources revealed the regularities of information presented therein. This enabled nine aspects of genealogical consciousness to be distinguished: legendary, sacral, agnatic /sword, sword and distaff, rank / post, confessional, military, material/ land ownership and donative. A part of the above-mentioned investigation is presented in this article, i.e. the legendary and sacral aspects (when genealogical consciousness is based on legendary kinship and relationship with the saints / the Venerable or clergymen. The results of the investigation revealed the tendency that family members of the nobility traced themselves to Palemon and his associates from Rome described in Lithuanian chronicles or related themselves to the families of the nobility abroad. Family members of the lower rank ‘looked for’ their ancestors on the basis of linguistic similarities of their proper names and the names of foreign states, cities, localities or other linguistic peculiarities. The case of the Denhoff family showed that legendary and sacral genealogical consciousness could be based on the use of the same heraldry. In this case a common coat-of-arms as if changed the non-existing ties of blood and became the condition for kinship. The nobility sought to have a canonised, beatified person among their ancestors who was not related to them with the ties of blood, or the dignitary of the Church, and the nobility of a lower rank accentuated their kinship with the churchmen. The results of the analysis of the Bulharyn genealogical consciousness determine the conclusion that in the 18th century, after the status of the family of a lower rank became more important, in parallel a genealogical narrative of the family was created whose both legendary and sacral aspects were oriented towards the analogous representation of a genealogical nature of the nobility.

Arria Antonina, had other names. And we know this because her 'Antonina' name was the feminine form of her father's alias name of 'Arrius Antoninus'. The name 'Antoninus' was a name created by using one of Arrius Piso's inherited names ('Antonius') and 'ninus' (i.e., "baby boy"), which alluded to Arrius Piso as the baby Jesus. Even though I knew about Arria Antonina for awhile, I was not able to comment upon her in any of my works until now. The reason is that because of her name, I was not entirely certain that she was a different individual other than her sister Claudia Phoebe, who was aka Arria Fadilla. In all of these instances where there are similar names involved, caution and diligence is absolutely necessary or mistakes can be easily made. And, also, because under that name, she was associated with certain other people-which meant that I had to do more investigation and research into just what her relationship was with other family members. Finding out things such as this can take time. Remember, even with all of my knowledge of the subject, my expertise and experience, and even working upon this with a high level of expertise for more than 20 years, it is only within the last few years that I discovered that Arrius Piso had this other daughter. And, the only way that such things can be discovered is by doing this exactly as I have been doing it, by building profiles or data bases for each individual and working slowly, carefully and with certainty. If one were to read and believe the histories of the time as written, believing that the authors were being honest and forthright, we would never discover all of the things such as this, that they were hiding or disguising. If we thought of Claudia Phoebe, for instance, only as Pompeia Plotina, we would not know that she had children. The only way to discover such things, is to find out what alias or alternate names...

The paper analyses, in the light of the recent magisterial documents of the Church, one of the practices present in the life of the Catholic Church, the so-called Family Tree Healing (FTH). The study focuses foremost on the most important source of this practice in the Czech Republic, that is the book Healing Family Tree by Kenneth McAll. It evaluates its inner reliability and logics, and some problematic points of the theoretical basis of this practice in the context of the Catholic doctrine. The authors find that the FTH contradicts the Catholic doctrine on a biblical basis especially in the question of reduction of the evil and the freedom of man. In the conclusion, the study proposes a hypothesis that the FTH represents a reaction to the spiritual vacuum experienced by the modern man and that the concepts associated with FTH are not strange to similar phenomena in the current popular culture, but also in the Asian shamanism."

We reconstruct the year of publication of each cuneiform tablet of the Nuzi society in ancient Mesopotamia. The tablets, are on land transaction, marriage, loan, slavery contracts etc. The number of tablets seem to increase by logistic growth until saturation. It may show the dynamics of concentration of lands or other properties into few powerful families in a period of about twenty years. We reconstruct family trees and social networks of Nuzi and estimate the publication years of cuneiform tablets consistently with the trees and networks, formulating least squares problems with linear inequality constraints.

Genealogy and genealogical self-awareness were very important elements of the frame of a noble society’s fortress in the 19th century. The analysis of some genealogical trees, schemes, etc. and the diary-memoir of a noble woman Gabrielė Giunterytė-Puzinienė showed several genealogical aspects treasured by nobles. Family members who were high-ranking soldiers, patrons, or belonged to the clergy were treated very respectfully. Having a wide net of family ties and high-status relatives were a remarkable tool for showing ones family’s origin and position in the society. Wealth played an important role as well. Various official and legal documents, individual contemplations, memories and memoirs of other persons or armorials created by Szymon Okolski and Bartosh Paprocki served as remarkable sources for keeping the genealogical memory of families alive. Genealogical trees, schemes etc. could be treated as more reliable sources for genealogical self-awareness because of the elimination of the subjective viewpoint, as we can face it in the abovementioned diary. Nevertheless, the Giedraitis Family case negated this statement. G. Giunterytė-Puzinienė’s diary-memoir is an extraordinary  source  for  exploring  genealogical  identity.  Genealogy  is  a  vivid  and  detailed  story  in  this  book.  One  can  smell,  hear,  and  touch  it.  Collective  holidays, events, and various forms of recreation became tools for strengthening the genealogical self-awareness and family memory.
