Between 2018 and 2022 I was the responsible co-editor of the Journal of the Swiss Anthropological Association.
My research interests include qualitative methods, in particular, ethnography, and the sociology of work, occupations, and gender. More generally, I’m interested in the articulation of life spheres and in gender inequalities in the workplace.
I hold an MA degree from the University of Fribourg (sociology, social anthropology, religious studies) and a PhD from both the University of Lausanne and EHESS (joint degree). During my PhD in Social Sciences / Sociology I was working as a graduate assistant at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lausanne (2010 - 2016) and completed a doctoral thesis, “Butcher and Florist Occupations: An Ethnography of Gender at Work” (written in French). I was interested in the activities while they are being done and in how people do what they do. In observing the workplace activities, my aim was to understand how gender is implicitly or explicitly referred to and if and when it becomes a salient element for the organization of workplace activities. I was able to show that individuals invest gender with varying levels of salience in specific situations in the workplace. By questioning the ‘taken for granted’ sex categories, I have been investigating how people are making gender locally relevant (or not).
Before joining the Sociology Department at Goethe Universität as a visiting scholar (SNSF fellowship, March 2018 - February 2020), I was working at the IUMSP (Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine) / CHUV (Lausanne University Hospital) as an SNSF post-doc research fellow in a project on “breastfeeding & paid employment". In April/May 2018 I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago (Dept of Sociology). During the Spring semester of 2020, I was a lecturer at the University of Fribourg (CH).
Between June 2020 and January 2021, I was a Research Fellow at the Chair for General Sociology and Cultural Sociology at the University of Konstanz (SNSF fellowship). I was also a visiting scholar at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (School of Social work) in Lausanne (HETSL).edit

In this article, we elaborate an integrative framework of the gender order that considers gender as something simultaneously structurally outside of individual action and as constantly done through interaction. Combining a structural perspective with micro-interactionist accounts makes it possible to show how these mechanisms manifest themselves and how individuals engage with and concretely ‘do gender’ in situ. We focus on three mechanisms through which the gender order emphasizes difference and creates inequality: androcentrism, agentic masculinity, and female devaluation. We illustrate our elaboration of the gender order with empirical evidence from two dramatically different male-dominated employment settings, meat-processing and higher education, in Switzerland and Germany, respectively.

This article investigates the bodily experiences of professional butchers in Switzerland from a gender perspective. It also analyzes the places assigned to women and men in this line of work. Though the author took special care not to impose a gendered interpretation of her field data, her own experience as a female ethnographer in this male milieu brought the centrality of gender as an explanatory variable to the fore, particularly in the definition of what makes a “good butcher”. Using ethnographic vignettes from her field notes, the author shows how her interlocutors establish direct links between sex categories and professional activities, which are judged as either “male” (slaughtering and cutting up carcasses) or “female” (preparing and selling meat). Thus, the conditions for the production of butchers’ bodies differs between men and women. This differentiation can, in turn, be linked to recent reforms (the creation of new job titles, particularly in sales), which both attract new apprentices (mainly women) and lead to the reconfiguration of sex-based segregation within the profession.

This article addresses the question of how creativity is displayed among florists working in Switzerland, and how exactly gender plays out in this process. It investigates how the florists refer to creativity as a natural skill, according to which criteria these “creative identities” are allocated, and how gender intersects with this allocation process. Drawing on thirty-six months of ethnographic research in various occupational settings, I will examine the gendering of creativity and its unequal allocation among workers in a highly feminized occupation. This article brings to light that although the scope for creativity is first presented as equally distributed among women and men, it becomes gendered upon a closer look: male florists tend to be perceived as truly creative. The resulting inequality is important to understand in order to unveil certain underlying mechanisms at play: even in a highly feminized occupation, masculinity appears to be strongly associated with professional competence (first published online in 2018)

When professional training serves the sexual division of labour. A case study of the meat sector in Switzerland.
This ethnographic study of the meat sector in Switzerland investigates how an occupation becomes gendered, and more particularly the role played by professional training curricula in this labeling process. It shows how the Swiss meat industry has attempted to combat the negative images potentially associated with animal slaughter, notably through the introduction of a new training option, based on so-called « feminine » activities of meat product preparation. However, analysis shows that, rather than promoting women’s entry into the profession, this initiative tends to reinforce gender stereotypes and to crystallize a normative sexual division of labour within the occupation. ////

Life expectancy at birth has sharply increased during the 20th century, making old age one of the great
challenges of contemporary welfare states. The addition of several decades of life expectancy, modifications in solidarity structures for the elderly, but also the diversification of ways of aging have led to the implementation of collective responses, among which the professionalization of elder care occupies a predominant place. It is therefore crucial to investigate occupational activities and those who carry them out. This is why this panel will specifically focus on work, occupations, and voluntary workers involved in elder care, whether or not they are part of the medical personnel. It will explore how workers from various professions deal with old age, with a particular attention to professional cultures and identities, tensions, professional boundaries and territories, but also to the interactions
and collaborations among different professional groups, and between those involved in the social model of care and medical professions. This workshop aims at bringing together sociologists from different fields interested in these professionals and voluntary workers, and their practices, and will focus more broadly on the social challenges of aging and their impact on professional groups. Contributions can cover a variety of fields, as long as they involve professionals or volunteers providing a service or support to the elderly.

In order to understand the phenomenon of 'doing and undoing gender' and the discursive accounts of gendered occupations, it appears fruitful to diversify the contexts chosen for analysis. My contribution will focus on the issues raised by doing research on occupational settings characterized by radically different statistical gender compositions. I have personally chosen to focus on florists and butchers. To generally associate 'masculinity' with features of the workplace such as heavy, dirty or mechanical work would be too simplistic and, in fact, only reproduce stereotypical assumptions about men's experiences at work. It is hence important to question exactly how 'masculinity' is displayed through ordinary and professional discourse and through situated practices. The analysis of various professional documents, ethnographical observation and interviews should allow me to look into these two aspects and to question whether and how workplaces and occupations define a range of masculinities and femininities that are legitimate within a specific context. I am thus investigating exactly how these occupations are 'gendered' in such a way that being a male florist may pose 'problems,' while male butchers fit perfectly into our conception of what is 'normal.' Furthermore, I am interested in exploring the extent to which slaughtering an animal, cutting up meat or selling it in the shop are gendered activities, and if and how gender matters when the florist is giving a client advice about wedding flowers or when he/she is preparing floral arrangements. My research seeks to i) investigate how gendered an occupation is ii) explore the situated relevance of gender affiliation in interactional patterns and discuss how and when the participants orient to gender categories and finally iii) identify the potentially variable ways in which men and women mobilize their gender affiliation in their daily work lives
