duced tapes tmf @rtw Leners Patent No. 94,953, daad samba 21, 186e; named August e1, 186e.v
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCE.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may conce/ru;
l Be it known that I, NEWTON J GLovER, of the town of Waveland,in the county of Montgomeryand State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved 'Portable Zigzag Fence; and I do hereby'declare that thefollowing is a full and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying; drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
`The nature o f my invention consists in anew mode of bracing or' supporting the'corners of a portable zigzag fence.
My invention has for its object an' improvement on my patent of' October'S, 1867, and numbered 69,654, and consists inthe provision on the brace therein shown, of a notched block arranged on the side of said brace, and receiving thepcorner batteus of the two adjacent panels,
To enableothers skilled in the art-to make my ihvention, I will proceed to describeits construction.
I use three or more small posts to each panel of felice, the number governed by the length of the panels, and with the posts at the ends onopposite sides,
that they may come on the'insideof the corners when the fence is up, and until after the fence is up, I use but one nail at each place ,where the planks cross the posts.
lThis enables the panels to adjust to the unevenness of the gionnd,.or blocks, or stone that may be put under the corners to keep them off the ground, after which, use the desired number of nails.
The panels are supported by the braces A A, passing through the spaces between the two upper andthe two lower planks of the fence.
These braces are provided with cleats c c c c at the ends, and projecting beyond the width of the braces,
so 4as to press against the outside'of the corners, as
shown, and on the opposite side of the braces are at tached, lengthwise with them, pieces o o, projecting at right angles from the braces, a suicient distance to be notched to receive the posts. These pieces may be notched so as to receive both posts in the same notch, or apart, as shown, the distance apart regulating the spaces between the posts at the corners, and if preferred, the pieces o o may be attached on either edge of the braces with the saine advantage as on the the spacesdescribed, turn them on edge, and carry theV loose end of the panel back until `properly bound by the braces, as shown, the posts in the notches as described.
For a fence to turn oni y the larger stock, I anticipate using the fence with only the two' top planks and one brace.
In combination with the brace A, provided with cleats c, I claim themotched blocks'o, constructed and arranged as described.
. NEWTON J. GLOVER.
