Description
.declare that the following is a full sible for the purpose,
Mesas-W E Gb aer-
m, @9. i @wat @than IMPRQ'VEMENT IN FENCE. www- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS T. BARNES, of Seneca, in thegouuty of Ontario, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing` a Fence, with new and improved posts; and I do hereby and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of two panels of fence, supported by my improved posts. Y
Figure 2 is a side view of said post.
In the construction of fences in rural districts, the first consideration is the character of material accesthe second is the simplest mode of framing or putting it together, so as to avoid the necessity of employing expensive labor. To accomplish this, and utilize any material at hand, is the object of my invention, which consists of a novel method. of sustaining and framing the support of a fence, whereby it may be constructed by au ordinary ield-hand,'and any character and quality ofmaterial that may be accessible cau be used for such purpose.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it by'referring to the drawings, in which- E represents the groundsill of the supporting-portion of the fence, which may be in the shape of a log,
slab, plank, or board, whichever may be most accessible, and of suitable length to sustain` the fence against the force of the wind or animal pressure tending to overturn it. In this sill I bore two holes near the centre, and of su'icient distance apart to admit the substance of the panel or rails to be supported between i the posts F, inserted therein, and'near each end of this slab I bore a similar hole for the insertion of the braces G. at such an angle as that the top of said braces shall extend nearly to the top ofthe posts F. The upper ends ofthe braces G may be bevelled to t against the posts', or they maybe notched-into them, and are then secured together by a wire binding, H C, crossed and twiued between the two uprights, so as to hold them about parallel, and, at the same time, to bind the posts and their braces all firmly together at their upper ends.
In case of a panel fence being formed of boards, made up as represented in the drawing, the wire H serves to suspend such panel by its upper railA being arranged above it, and, ifuecessary, another wire may be laced around the post in similar manner, below the bottom, on each of the other rails, or separate boards or rails may be used, built up, as it were, between the said posts and those of two adjacent panels,-alternating one above the other, the uppermost only resting on the'bindingwire H C.
It will thus be seen that a very simple, serviceable, andl at the same time, permanent or portable fence, may be constructed out of such material as is accessible, and may be made by any ordinary field-hand.
Having thus described my invention,
,"What I claim as new, and desire to secure b'y Letters Patent, is-
Jlhe combination of the sill E', posts F, and brace G,
all arranged in holes in the sill, and secured together at the top by the binding-wire H (l, substantiallyas.
and for the purpose set forth.
A. T. BARNES. Witnesses:
C. E. COLEMAN, G. W. GorFIN.
