Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
ELI G. WARNER, OF UNION TOWNSHIP, MADISON COUNTY, OHIO.
livlPRovEivll-:Ni IN RAIL FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,186, dated September 15, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, ELI G. WARNER, of Union township, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Building Bail Fences; and I do hereby declare that tliefollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
I rst take three pieces of scantling, and construct a frame in a triangular form, as shown at the letters A B C in the accompanying drawing. Having made as many frames as are required for the fence, I set them a sufficient distance apart, (varying according to the length of the rails to be used.) I lay the rails D D in an oblique direction upon the base of the frames, or from the point marked O on one frame to the point marked B in the next frame, as shown in the drawing. I then lay short rails E E across the end of the rails D D, and repeat the operation until the frames are filled.
By this arrangement, it will be seen by reference to the drawing that rails at the top of the `frames are one straight line, and the rails at the base are oblique lines from one frame to the next, thus bracing the fence, so that it cannot be blown down by the winds or pushed down by cattle. Furthermore, by changing the angle of the frames, shorter rails can be used at the bottom of the fence than at the top, for the space from O to B is much less than from A to A.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction of a fence with a triangular frame, A B C, in which the rails are laid obliquely, in the manner and for the purpose as above stated.
ELI G. WARNER.
Witnesses:
JOSEPH GARNS, B. BLAKE.
