TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, ESEK C. ROBERTS, of Salem, Washtenaw county, Michigan, have invented anew and useful improvement in Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following-is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whicli- V Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of my improv-ed fence.

Figure 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same, taken through the line :v rc, fig. 1.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved straight rail fence so constructed that the rails and stakes will bind each other firmly, securing the fence against `wind or animals; and it consists in the combination of they top rails or riders and stakes with each other and the rails of the fence, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described. i i

A are the rails of the fence, the ends of which are laid upon and overlap each other, as shown -in iig. El. B are stakes which are set vertically in the ground upon each side `of and close to the fence at the points where the ends of the rails of the adjacent panels overlap each other. C are inclined stakes set in the ground at such an angle that the rails D, laid in the angle formed by the crossing of stakes C and between the vertical stakes B, shall not be at such a height as to leave too wide a space between the said rails D and the upper rails A. The inclined stakes C are set upon `opposite sides of the vertical stakes B, as shown in figs. 1 and 2.V E are the top rails or riders, which are placed with one end in the angle between the outer side of one'of the stakes B and the inner side of the stake C, and with the other end in theV angle between the next vertical and inclined stakes upon the opposite side of the fence so asto be at a slight angle with the line of the fence. The rails E are so arranged upon the stakes as to hold the stakes B close up against the rails A, and at the same time to hold the stakes C close up against the stakes B, binding the whole vfence firmly and strongly together.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the top rails or riders E with the stakes B and C, substantially in the manner herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
