Description

Letters .Patent No. 95,982, dated October 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and marking part pf the lame.
I, J. S. BURCH, of the city of Bualo, in the county of Erie, and the State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in the Construction of Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing portable fences, in suchv a manner that the same may bereadily put up without the use of a single nail or its equivalent, and, also, may be taken down with the same facility.
The accompanying drawings show more fully the peculiality of the improvement.
Figure 1, in the drawing, represents a ready put-up fence, in a perspective view.
Figure 2 represents a transverse section of g. l, showing those4 parts which constitute the post and supports .of the same. l They are jointed together with a bolt, in such a manner that the same may be folded together when the fence is taken up, and so easily stored away.
Figure 3 shows the rail separately.
Letter A, in the respective 1i gures, is the post, which is provided with a series of slot-holes, as may be seen, for the purpose of receiving the rails.
This post is secured to the supports-B B, by means of bolt C, and is pointedon its lower end, that it may with ease be put into the ground.
post and supports and upper B B are the supports of post A. lhey are constructed on the plan of a pair of tongs, and so arranged,
that when they are spread apart on their lower end, they will close at their upper, where they form the jaws or mouth D to receive the upper rail, and there securely hold the same.
-E is this upper rail, constructed for the purpose of supporting the fence lengthwise, and is, therefore, provided with two notches on its lower edge, (one on each end,) to lock in the supports B B.
It will be observed, that when the second rail E is slipped into the slot-hole d', after the upper rail is se- Witnesses H. WM. Dorr, MICH. J STARK.
