IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.

Be it known that I, ALFRED M. NICHOL, of Granville, county of' Licking, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing a fence of boards or plank in such a. manner as to save the necessity of sinking the post in to the ground, using instead a peculiar style of braces to support the fence in an upright position, thus rendering it in a manner portable, and preserving the post from rapid decay, by being supported above ground.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.

Figure 2 represents the base which supports the weight and locks the panels together at the bottom.

Figure 3 exhibits the brace, to hold the fence in an upright position.

I oonstru ct my fence in separate panels lby nailing boards` A to the baton or stiles B in such a.A manner as to leave the boards at one end projecting a few inches past the baton or stile, while at the other end they are out even with it, excepting the lower board O, which projects at each end, so as to form a lap with the next panel, so as to be firmly locked and supported with the notched base C. Post F is rmly planted in the ground, and holds the brace E in position, which, with the aid of clamps D and L, supports the fence rigidly in position. Clamps D and L have slots s to iit on brace E at m, iig. `3. n, iig. 3, exhibits brace E cut away to clasp post F. H exhibits the manner of extending the fence at an angle byhalving the ends ofthe boards together to form a locked connection ofthe panels.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The locking' and supporting the panels as shown in position, by means of the base-block C, together with the post F, brace E, and clamps D and L, substantially as described.
