Beit kndwn that I, ABRAHAM LAPHAM, of Farmington, in the county of Oakland, and State of Michigan,

have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Hinged Fences; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof,referenee being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being-a part ot' this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention.

Figure 2 is an end view of the same.

The same letters refer to like parts in each figure.

The nature of this invention is so to construct afence that it can easily be adapted to all inequalities of l ground, that will'stand rm wherever placed, that is economical in construction, that will avoid the necessity of setting posts, and that can 'readily be folded up, transported, and set up in a new position when desired. i

In order to accoinplish this end, I construct a. fence, consisting of parallel bars, A, naiied or otherwise fastened to upright bars, B, to which, by means of a. pivot, C, bolt-hinge, or'other suitable device, are attached, near the top end, the bars or braces D, to the top oi' which is attached top board, E, of the fence.

By spreading the bottoms ofthe upright bars B and D, (which are pivoted or hinged as above described,)

, a irm base is made to sustain the fence in a proper position.

The hars or braces D may be made longer than the bars B whenever desired, and when used in a position very much exposed to wind and danger of being thrown down, may be provided with a stake, F, which may be attached in any suitable manner, and driven into the ground, for the purpose of anchoring the fence, and pre-` venting its dslodgment, from any'accidental canse.V

The ends oi the bars A may be bevelled oi alternately to the front and rear, vso that when brought together',' in setting up the various lengths of fence, a lckwill be formed, by means of which additional security and a straight line may be'given to the fence. v t
