Abstract
A comminuted flux composition for submerged are welding comprises by weight 4 per cent-32 per cent lime, 5 per cent-25 per cent calcium fluoride 40 per cent-60 per cent iron oxide (calculated as FeO) and if desired one or more of up to 15 per cent magnesia, up to 10 per cent silica, up to 25 per cent alumina, up to 2 per cent of an oxidic vanadium compound (e.g. NaVO3), and up to 10 per cent titania. The product is preferably prefused in a furnace prior to comminution, specifically by sintering the constituents other than the vanadium or titanium oxides at 900 DEG C.-1200 DEG C., comminuting and sizing to 12-200 mesh, and adding the vanadium or titanium oxides. Specific compositions are given.
