Abstract

A submerged arc flux contains 0.5-8.0% of niobium and comprises particles of a homogenous vitreous mass containing niobium in non-elemental form and 0.2-3.0% of carbon. This flux can be made by fusing columbite and the other ingredients of the flux in a furnace, carbon being absorbed from the furnace lining. If desired anthracite may be added. Niobium oxide may be formed from niobium metal or alloy during the preparation of the flux. The flux may consist of an intimate mixture of granules containing up to 50% niobium and granules free from niobium, the overall niobium content not exceeding 8%. The other constitutes may be SiO2, CaO, CaF2, Al2O3, FeO, MgO, TiO2, ZrO2, Mno, Na2O and K2O.
