749,557. Gas turbine plant. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURGNURNBERG AKT.-GES. Dec. 3, 1953 [Dec. 3, 1952], No. 33669/53. Class 110(3) A gas turbine plant working on the open, semi-open or closed cycle comprizing a number of machine sets each consisting of a compressor driven by a turbine at least one of which supplies useful power has control members whereby the direction of rotation of the useful power machine set can be reversed by supplying air to the turbine exhaust and the heated working fluid to the compressor discharge. The low pressure axial flow compressor 1 driven by a low pressure turbine 2 discharges through an intercooler 3 and a control member 4 during forward running, to the intake of a radial outward flow compressor 5. The compressor 5 discharges through a second control member 6 to the exhaust gas heat exchanger 7 and combustion chamber 8 which discharges through the control member 6 to the high pressure radial inward flow turbine 9 which drives the compressor 5 and through gearing 10 a propeller 11. The exhaust from the turbine 9 passes through the control member 4 to the reheat chamber 13 and low pressure turbine 2 which exhausts through the heat-exchanger 7. To reverse the direction of rotation of the propeller 11, the control members 4, 6 are moved to the position shown in dotted lines. The air from the compressor 5 then passes to the exhaust of the turbine 9 which then acts as a compressor and discharges through the control member 6 to the heat exchanger 7 and combustion chamber 8. The combustion chamber 8 feeds through the control member 6 working medium to the discharge of the compressor 5 which then acts as a turbine and discharges to the reheat chamber 13 as described above. A blow-off valve 16 is provided to prevent unstable operation of the compressors during reversing. A starting machine 5 may be used to facilitate reversing by being operative for a short time. Axial flow machines may be used for the compressor 5 and turbine 9. Radial flow machines may be used for the compressor 1 and turbine 2.
