844,246. Gas turbine plant. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Sept. 19, 1957 [Sept. 19, 1956], No. 28718/56. Class 110(3). In a gas turbine plant having in series flow relationship a high-pressure turbine 9 driving a compressor 2, a low- or intermediate-pressure turbine 10 supplying output power, such as for ship propulsion, a by-pass valve 12 being arranged in a duct interconnecting the inlet and outlet of the power turbine for the control of the output power, no control valve or stop valve is provided in the flow of the working medium between the by-pass valve and an upstream point where the working medium first takes in heat, a controlled relief valve 13 is provided at a point of the flow of the working medium between the compressor outlet and the compressor turbine inlet. In the plant shown, air from the compressor 2 passes through a duct 3 to the inlet header 4 of a heat exchanger 5 in which the air is pre-heated by turbine exhaust gases. The outlet header 6 of the heat exchanger is connected by a duct 7 to a combustion chamber 8 from which gases pass in series through the turbines 9, 10. The relief valve 13 is controlled in dependence on the speed of the high-pressure turbine and compressor shaft by means of a governor 14 but it may alternatively be controlled manually. The fuel supply may be controlled by a speed governor and the relief valve by hand, the relief valve being preferably interlocked with the operation of the by-pass valve. In the case of a closed cycle plant, air blown off from the relief valve could be led for example to a pre-cooler in front of the compressor. In a further arrangement the power turbine is an intermediate pressure turbine disposed between a high-pressure turbine driving a high-pressure compressor and a low-pressure turbine driving a low-pressure compressor.
