Abstract
637,619. Motor power plant: gas turbine plant. AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVE CO. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 5816. Convention date, April 13, 1944. [Class 110(iii)] Engines 2, 3 which run in opposite directions, are used alternatively to drive a reversible load such as a ship's propeller 1. When the engine 2 takes the load, the clutch 14 is open and the engine 3 operates independently. When the engine 3 takes the reverse load, the clutch 14 is closed, working fluid is shut off from the engine 2 and that engine runs idly in the reverse direction. In the plant shown the engines are gas turbines, the turbine 3 drives one stage 24 of a compressor and a turbine 38 drives another stage 23. An interstage cooler 34 and an exhaust heat-exchanger 36 are provided. When turbine 2 is driving the forward load, the clutch 14 being open, the three turbines are in fluid series with a primary combustion chamber 41 and re-heat chambers 19 and 20. When turbine 3 is driving the reverse load, the clutch 14 being closed as shown, the working fluid byepasses turbine 2, which is running idly, through a valve 17. The turbine 38 may be omitted and both compressor stages driven by turbine 3. The clutch may be as described in U.S.A. Specification 1,107,717.
