711,789. Gas turbine plant; jet propulsion plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. April 1, 1952 [Jan. 2, 1951], No. 195/51. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXIX] A compound compressor turbine engine comprises a compressor system 10 having at least two rotor sections 10a. 10b, one of which is in permanent driving connection with a turbine of the engine whilst a second rotor section thereof is arranged to be drivingly coupled to said first section through disengageable clutch means 24 comprising a hydraulic clutch coupling and positive or frictional clutch means. The clutch 24 is controlled by the power control lever of the plant. If desired, actuation of the hydraulic and friction clutches may be effected in accordance with the speed of the high-pressure and low-pressure stages of the compressor respectively. A ducted fan or a propeller may be drivingly associated with the low-pressure compressor and driven in conjunction therewith through suitable reduction gearing. In a modification, the low-pressure stage of the compressor is driven by a low-pressure turbine stage, both the turbine compressor rotor assemblies being interconnected by the clutch. Part of the air delivered by the low-pressure compressor may be exhausted to atmosphere or mixed with the exhaust gases in the exhaust duct. Specification 711,788 is referred to.
