A baffle plate with one heat-reflecting surface is slidably supported in a pair of brackets mounted between and adjacent the sides of a fireplace across the upper part of the front of the fireplace to reflect the heat from the fire in the required direction. A curved baffleplate 10 with a reflecting front surface is mounted at the top of the front of the fireplace in curved channels 29 formed in brackets 28. The brackets are mounted on the ends of a tube 15, Fig. 3, shorter than the fireplace width, and having at each end a sleeve 16 in which a threaded bolt 17 slides freely. The rounded ends of the bolts 17 engage sockets in pads 18 which are held against the fireplace sides by springs 23 engaging nuts 22 on the bolts 17. Flattened heads 24 on the bolts cooperate with flattened parts 26 of the tube 15 to prevent rotation of the bolts. Light springs 27 urge the bolts to the retracted position. The baffle 10 slides in the channels in the brackets 28 so that its position may be adjusted. It is held in position by a clamping screw 30. The baffle may be flat, and a separate plate may be provided to close any gap between the baffle and lintel of the fireplace. Shoes having projecting tongues engaging between the fireplace and the surround may be fitted over the pads to prevent the mounting rod slipping forwards.
