Abstract

782,830. Canopies. CLOWES, M. April 7, 1955 [June 21, 1954], No. 18078/54. Class 126 A canopy for an open fireplace extending across the width of the fireplace and projecting downwardly to reduce the fireplace opening is secured in place by clamping members at each end which are urged sideways by springs or. manually operable devices to engage the sides of the fireplace. A downwardly and outwardly extending canopy 1, an upwardly directed flange 2 which masks the edge of the fireplace surround and a rearwardly directed bracing member 3 are formed by bending a continuous sheet of metal or other non- combustible material. The double walls 4 at the ends of the canopy are forced outwardly by plates 6 carrying studs 7 which engage the ends of tubes 8, 9 telescoping within each other and urged apart by a spring 10. In a modification, Fig. 6, not shown, the studs engage the ends of sleeves held apart by a nut on a screw threaded rod. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the bracing member 3 is formed separately and secured in the fireplace, and the flange 2 has two spaced members fitting over a flange 18 on the bracing member.
