Abstract
647,624. Furnace grates; air supply. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J. Nov. 12, 1948, No. 29382. [Class 51 (i)] In solid fuel furnaces in which an airbox is supplied with air by an external fan the air duct from the fan to the box is taken through the lower part of the fuel container thereby reducing the number of angular turns in the air duct. As shown applied to an underfeed tubular flue type boiler combustion air is supplied by the fan 15 through the duct 16 to the air-box 22 the duct 16 passing through the lower part 11 of the fuel hopper 10. Alternatively, the lower part of the hopper may be divided into two portions with the air duct passing between them. Within the furnace are a pair of housings 18 into which the ends of the screw conveyers 13, 14 project the forward parts of the housing inclining upwardly at 19. Arranged above the conveyer housings are three longitudinal air distributing branches 23 of the air box 22, the branches being connected at their inner ends by a transverse branch 24. Tuyere openings 25 are provided in the inner side of the box 22, in the inner side of the branch 24 and in both sides of the branches 23.
