Abstract

574,622. Spanners. JAMES, I., and ROBERTS, B. Feb. 9, 1944, No. 2424. [Class 61 (iii)] An adjustable spanner comprises a fixed jaw member and a movable jaw member, one of which has recesses engaged by a locking and adjusting means of variable thickness mounted on the other. As shown in Fig. 1, the movable jaw 10 is fixed to a shank 11 which is guided for longitudinal movement between the outer edge 9 of the handle 1 and the end 4 of a slot 2 in the fixed jaw member. Locking means consists of a disc 16 of varying thickness' permitting fine adjustment. The disc is provided with a slot 19A through which the shank 11 can slide freely for larger adjustments. In the alternative form shown in Fig. 4, the movable jaw 26 has a shank 28 which lies against the edge 23 of the handle 20. Lateral movement of the shank is prevented by a strap 30 which encircles the shank and the handle. The locking disc 16A is fixed to the shank. In a modification, a wedge-shaped member provided with an elongated slot and locking screw is adapted to slide in and out of the recesses.
