Abstract

899,360. Wrenches. WACKETT, L. Oct. 15, 1958, No. 32946/58. Class 61. An adjustable wrench comprises a jaw 4 fixed to a sidewardly projecting portion at the head of the stock or handle 3 and a movable jaw 12 pivoted to the handle 3 by a pivot pin 11 which is adjustable, the jaw 12 being actuated by a compound lever device including a hand lever 5 pivoted at 6 to the handle 3 and a second lever 10 adapted to turn in the same sense as the lever 5, the pivot point 8 between the first and second levers is adjustable in conjunction with that of the movable jaw to enable the mechanical advantage of the compound lever device to be increased as the movable jaw is adjusted to accommodate larger nuts. The outer faces of the substantially triangular jaws are tapered in such manner that the included angle is not more than 30 degrees when the gripping faces are parallel. The intermediate portion of the lever 10 has closely spaced holes 15 adapted to accommodate the pivot pin 11 which extends through a selected pair of holes 16 in the cheeks of the head of the handle 3. The pivot pin 8 similarly extends through a selected pair of slots 14 in the cheeks of the projecting portion 7c at the head of the hand lever 5. The slotted end 9 of the lever 10 engages with the pin 8. The holes 14, 16 bear double reference marks to aid assembly of the parts. The pin 8 has two flats formed on its shank asymmetrically with the axis of the pin and adapted to slidably engage the sides of the slot 9, reversal of the pin in the slot providing fine adjustment of the tool.
