Application filed December 20, 1924. Serial No. 757,106.
My invention relates to wrenches having adjustable'jaws, and especially to the type known as monkey wrenches. It is well known that in the ordinary Wrench, especially after it has been worn from use, it is'diflicnlt to adjust the jaws to a tight ,fit upon the nut or In the drawings annexed hereto and which are intended merely as illustrations of my in vention, Fig. 1 is an elevation of one embozliment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view, looking upwards, of. Fig. 1, In Fig. 1, the shank of the wrench is represented at 1, the lower part of the shank being formed as a handle, and the upper .part being provided with a jaw 2. Another jaw 3 is slidably mounted upon shank lby means of the sleeve 4, and is adapted to cooperate with jaw Q. Mounted to move along shank 1 is a sleeve 5 bearing a rotatable, screw-threaded shaft mounted in bosses 14, 15 and adapted to engage screw threads 7 in sleeve A knurled nut 8 is provided to facilitate rotation of shaft 6.
Pivotally mounted upon shank 1, as at 9, is a bifurcated, bell crank lever 10 having a grip portion 11 extending downward into proximity with and to one side of the grip portion of the shanks; and a lever arm 12 extending upwardly upon the other side of the shank 1, and carrying a roller 13 adapted to engage the boss 14. A leaf spring 16'int-erposed between shank 1 and lever grip. 11 urges the two latter apart.
In operation the jaws are adjusted as close- 1y as possible by turning the nut 8 in the usual manner. The operator then grasps the members 1 and 11 in hishand thus bringing them together against the action of spring 16.
By this action the roller 13 rises, carrying with itsleeves 5 and 4 and closing the jaws 2 and '3 firmly against the object to be held. The parts are so arranged and designed that the roller 13 is never "far from the dead center position thus making it possible to exert-any clamping iorce desired.
' The lower part-'o'l' the shank 1 may be provided, if desired, with a latch to hold lever grip 11 in the dotted line position shown in the drawings. Furthermore the roller 13 may be replaced by a direct link connection to'boss 1 1; or boss 14 may carry roller 13 and the upper part of. arm 12 shaped as a cam to cooperate therewith.
My invention may be applied to any of the various types of wrench now in use andis not limited except as specified in the claim; It isobvious that the aws may be provided with tee h or serrations, or shaped in any manner for special purposes.
