Abstract
551,327. Pipe joints. STAVELY COAL & IRON CO., Ltd., FREER, E. Aug. 14, 1941, No. 10366. [Class 99 (i)] In a spigot-and-socket joint having a packing- ring 16 which is rolled into position between the spigot and socket by the insertion of the former, the surface 15 of the socket, between which and the spigot the ring 16 finally rests on completion of the joint, is tapered so that its narrower end is towards the mouth of the socket. Insertion of the ring 16 is facilitated by the use of a resilient guide sleeve 14 fitted in a recess 13 at the mouth of the socket 11. The ring is placed in the outer recess of the sleeve 14 as shown, and is rolled by the inserted spigot 19 past ribs 25 and past a rolling surface 17 in the socket 11, into the tapered portion 15. This surface 15 is inclined to the axis of the socket at an angle of not less than 4 degrees, and is succeeded by a stopping surface of opposite taper. The end 20 of the spigot is tapered at two different angles. The ribs on the sleeve 14 prevent entry of dirt to the completed joint. Insertion of the spigot may be further facilitated by means of a removable segment 22 held by a screw 24.
