Abstract
454,793. Pipe couplings. GASKELL & CHAMBERS, Ltd., and WEIGHTMAN, J. S., Dale End, Birmingham. April 5, 1935, Nos. 10527 and 12500. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe coupling, for connecting pipes 4, 5 or for coupling a pipe to the inlet fitting of a beer engine or to the outlet fitting of a barrel, comprises a sleeve 6 into each end of which a pipe is adapted to engage with a sliding fit, and a stuffing box at each end of the sleeve, each stuffing box including a cap nut 15 adapted to screw on the end of the sleeve, a gland ring 13 in the nut, and packing material 11, preferably synthetic cork, adapted to be compressed on the pipe between the ring and an integral part-conical face 8 on the end of the sleeve, the ring being a sliding fit on the pipe and having a portion fitting closely within a surrounding part 14 of the nut to locate the latter with respect to the ring and upon the end of the pipe. In a modification, the outside part of the ring 13 is expanded to attach the ring permanently to the nut while permitting relative rotation. In this case, the packing consists of a circular ring of rubber or other deformable material.
