Abstract

521,593. Photo - mechanical printing surfaces. TOLAND, W. C., and BASSIST, E. Oct. 20, 1938, No. 30399. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1937. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] Collotype printing plates comprise a base having water-containing non-printing areas of polyvinyl alcohol. The printing areas are hardened as by using bichromate as sensitizer. In an example, the layer is prepared by mixing a suspension of polyvinyl alcohol with ammonium bichromate and ferric chloride, exposed, developed with ink and washed. Other iron salts such as ferric sulphate may be used in place of the ferric chloride. Alternatively the layer of polyvinyl alcohol may be overcoated with bichromated albumen or glue, exposed and developed. The base to receive the coating may be provided with a thin underlayer of sodium silicate. egg albumen, dextrin or glue. Specification 451,009 is referred to.
