236,532. Sachsisches Serumwerk Akt.-Ges., and Galetzka, A. July 1, 1924, [Convention date]. Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces.-In preparing printing-surfaces which may be used for letter-press or screen pictures or both combined, a sensitive layer which is exposed and treated to form the printing surface is coated on an elastic ink-repellant non-sensitive layer, and the parts of the printing surface not functioning for ink or colour transfer are removed, exposing thereat the ink-repelling layer. The base may be of any character (e.g. metal, glass, cellon or stone), and is preferably first coated with a thin coating of gelatin, waterglass and chrome alum. The intermediate ink-repelling layer is preferably water-absorbent, and conveniently of gelatin which is just sufficiently hardened to prevent any absorption of moisture during the short drying period after sensitizing, but allowing absorption of water during the subsequent developing in cold water. The water during development penetrates through the unexposed parts of the sensitive layer and swells the intermediate gelatin layer, raising the exposed parts evenly, and the layer forms a resilient backing behind the printing layer. A very thin sensitive layer may be used, in which case a substantially flat printing surface is obtained, or the sensitive layer may be thicker in which case a letter-press type of printing surface is produced.
