Abstract
507,854. Photomechanical printing- surfaces; etching. PHOTO-CYLINDER CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1937, No. 35389. Convention date, Jan. 22. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XVI] Etched intaglio-printing plates are prepared by forming on the surface to be etched a resist consisting of two series of intersecting lines which are curved or bellied inwardly between their points of inter-section to compensate for the less rapid action of the etching fluid in the corners, the resulting etched cells being square. The resist may be produced by copying an original using a crossline screen and a stop in the form of a cross, the arms of which F<1>, Fig. 4, taper towards the intersection F<2>. A positive from the resulting negative is then used to print on the surface of a metal plate coated with, for example, sensitized fish glue or photo-engravers' enamel. Alternatively, a screen may be produced as in Fig. 7 by exposure of a sensitive layer using a cross-line screen and a stop as in Fig. 4. This screen may then be printed on a negative of the subject or directly onto the surface to be etched. It may also be printed on carbon tissue and transferred thereto.
