496,473. Supply systems for discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. July 2, 1938, No. 19664. Convention date, July 5,1937. [Class 38 (iv)] In a supply system for a gas- or vapour-filled discharge lamp a portion 4 of a self-inductance 2 is connected in series with a condenser 6, while the remaining portion 5 of the self-inductance, which is magnetically coupled with the portion 4, is connected in series with the discharge tube 1 and in parallel with the condenser 6, the dimensions of the inductance and capacity being such that the natural frequency of the circuit formed by the portion 4 of the inductance and condenser 6 is at least equal to four times the fundamental frequency of the source of current, and the ratio between the portion 5 of the self-inductance located in parallel with the condenser 6 and the portion 4 is at least equal to four. In the example, with a supply of 220 volts at 50 cycles, the reactance of the coil 2 is 200 ohms, and of the portion 4 is 5 ohms, the capacity of the condenser being 8 ÁF. The natural frequency of the circuit formed by the condenser 6 and portion 4 is 445 cycles. The number of turns of the portion 5 of the choke coil is 5À3 times the number of turns of the portion 4.
