Abstract

1,017,120. Inverting; supply systems for space discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 19, 1964 [May 21, 1963], No. 20601/64. Headings H2F and H2H. A gas or vapour discharge lamp, or a number of such lamps in series, having two activated electrodes, are supplied from an inverter having at least one controlled semi-conductor element and an oscillatory circuit comprising inductance and capacitance wherein the ratio between the reactive power of the oscillatory circuit and the lamp power is so great that the power dissipated in the or one semi-conductor element does not exceed 150% (preferably 100%) of the power normally dissipated in that element if the lamp becomes rectifying. The inverter may be a parallel inverter with two transistors connecting the centre tapped primary of a transformer to a D.C. source and an oscillator parallel A.C. circuit connected to the secondary. The lamp has the usual ballast impedance in series with it; the power ratio should be greater than 4 and the transformer and inductor of the oscillatory circuit may have the same magnetic core.
