Abstract
433,769. Discharge devices. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. April 24, 1935, No. 12342. Convention date, July 30, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] A gas-discharge tube, such as a lamp, is provided with an incandescent cathode and is connected in series with a choke coil, provided with tapping points, and the primary winding of the transformer, which supplies the heating current to the cathode, is connected to the choke coil in such manner that it may be connected in series with a part of the coil to the source of current for the tube. A sodium-vapour lamp 1 is provided with cathodes 2, 3 which are connected to secondary windings 4, 5 of a transformer 6, the primary winding 7 of which has its ends connected respectively to a tapping on a choke coil 10 and to the cathode 3 and terminal 8 of a current source 9. The coil 10 is connected at one end, to the cathode 2, and, at the other end, to the terminal 12 of the source 9 through a tapping. Upon a variation of the supply voltage the tappings are varied to maintain the normal voltage across the primary winding 7 and also the normal discharge current. The winding 7 may be connected permanently to the end 15 of the coil, and the arrangement may be used in cases where the frequency of the supply varies. Further, the winding 7 may be extended to form an autotransformer one end of which is connected through a resistance to a starting electrode. Numerical values are given in the Specification.
