Abstract
873,791. Supply systems for space discharge lamps; transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 5, 1958 [Nov. 20, 1957], No. 35542/58. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4)] A starting and ballasting circuit for an electric discharge lamp 16 connected in series with a capacitor 18 comprises a high-reactance transformer 1 having a magnetic core on the centre limb of which are wound the primary winding 2 and the secondary winding 3, the section 5 of the centre limb on which is placed the secondary winding 3 being arranged to have a reduced cross-section compared with the section 4 of the limb over which is placed the primary winding 2, the dimensions of the section 5 having the reduced cross-section being such that the section is magnetically saturated during part of each cycle of the supply voltage and with an open circuit on the secondary winding. The discharge lamp 16 is connected to a tapping 15 on the primary winding 2, the connection of the secondary winding 3 being such that the secondary winding 3 and part of the primary winding are in voltage opposition. The cross-section of the section 5 of the centre limb is preferably 40 to 80% of the section 4 of the limb and the length of the restricted cross-section is between 25 and 35% of the mean length of the secondary magnetic circuit. The magnetizing inductance when the restricted section is saturated is equal to 4 to 20% of the capacitive reactance of the capacitor 18 of the supply frequency.
