H., 21, Trevose Gardens, Sherwood, Nottingham, RIDLEY, W., 18, Cromwell Road, Beeston, Nottinghamshire, and STANTON IRONWORKS, CO., Ltd., Stanton-by-Dale, near Nottingham. May 19, 1933, No. 14532. [Class 99 (i)] [See also Group XXVI] In a pipe joint of the stuffing-box type with overlapping spigot and socket members d, c the packing comprises a deformable metal element and one or more harder metal elements, one or more of the interengaging spigot, socket and packing element surfaces conforming to a sphere struck from the pipe axis. In one form a soft metal ring e, Fig. 1 has a spherical surface engaging complementary surfaces on the socket and a hard metal ring f<1>. In other forms of joint, Figs. 2, 3 and 5, the soft metal ring e<2> is thin and of U or Z shape, having portions engaging both spigot and socket and two hard metal rings g, h. A third ring f may be included, and one or more of the rings are split at y, Fig. 2. The spherical surface of ring h engages a conical surface b of the socket, Figs. 3, 5. The gland ring x may be as described in Specification 282,160, [Class 99 (i)].
