Abstract

Dibenzanthrone and isodibenzanthrone are oxidized in sulphuric acid of 84--94 per cent concentration with manganese dioxide, to give improved products. According to examples, dibenzanthrone is oxidized, (1) in sulphuric acid of 94 per cent somewhat diluted; (2) as an aqueous paste with acid of the same concentration and in presence of boric acid, at 25 DEG C.; and (3) at 0 DEG without boric acid; (4) isodibenzanthrone is oxidized with diluted 94 per cent sulphuric acid in presence of boric acid. The products may be filtered directly or after purification with sodium bisulphite, and give on cotton blue shades from the hydrosulphite vat changing to brilliant green on oxidation.
