Abstract
2 : 2<1>-Dibenzanthronyl is subjected to oxidation as in Specification 203,533, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], using manganese dioxide, and sulphuric acid of greater dilution, viz. 80--88 per cent, thus giving a purer product. The initial material may also be purified before the oxidation, by recrystallization. The sulphuric acid may be diluted by water, acetic acid or any other inert diluent. According to examples: (1) commercial 2 : 2<1>-dibenzanthronyl is oxidised with manganese dioxide and diluted sulphuric acid followed by filtering, treating with sodium bisulphite, and working up; (2) the recrystallized dibenzanthronyl is treated as in example (1); the products on alkylation according to Specification 193,431, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], give Jade Green dyes of high purity and great tinctorial strength.
