276,768. British Dyestuffs Corporation, Ltd., Baddiley, J., Shepherdson, A., and Thornley, S. June 21, 1926. Dibenzanthrone dyes.-The dyestuffs obtained by alkali fusion of benzanthrone sulphonation products, as described in Specification 276,766, are treated with alkylating agents, or first with oxidizing agents and then with alkylating agents; the oxidized products may be treated with reducing agents prior to alkylation. According to examples, (1) the alkali-fusion product of sulphonated benzanthrone (hydroxydibenzanthrone) is treated with dimethylsulphate in nitrobenzene; the methylation product dyes cotton in blue shades from the vat; (2) the same hydroxydibenzanthrone is oxidized with manganese dioxide in sulphuric acid, reduced by boiling with bisulphite solution, and methylated; the product dyes cotton in greenish-blue shades: the oxidation product and its reduced derivative also dye cotton, but the green shades so obtained are not fast to acid and alkali.
