Abstract

278,102. British Dyestuffs Corporation, Ltd., Shepherdson, A., and Hailwood, A. J. July 7, 1926. Pyranthrone derivatives. - Pyrantbrone is treated with oxidizing agents in sulphuric acid solution or suspension. The, product dyes cotton from the vat in brown shades which are not fast, becoming greener in presence of alkali and redder in presence, of acid; after alkylation, however, if desired after separation from unchanged pyranthrone or treatment with reducing agents, the product dyes cotton in fast red to brown shades. According to examples, pyranthrone is oxidized with manganese dioxide in sulphuric acid at 60‹ C. and the product boiled with sodium bisulphite and then methylated with dimethylsulphate. in nitrobenzene; the product dyes cotton in brown shades : if the reduced body is extracted with nitrobenzene to remove pyranthrone prior to methylation, the final product dyes cotton in red shades. Specification 193,431 is referred to.
