Benzanthrone derivatives. -2:2<1>-Dibenzanthronyls having free Bz1-positions are converted into sulphuric acid esters of their reduction products, for example by treating the dibenzanthronyl with pyridine sulphur trioxide in presence of pyridine and a metal, or by first reducing the dibenzanthronyl and then treating with chlorsulphonic acid and pyridine. According to examples. 2-2<1>-dibenzamthronyl, prepared by treating benzanthrone with mild alkaline condensing-agents, is treated with pyridine-sulphur trioxide, pyridine and copper, or with chlorsulphonic acid, pyridine, and copper, and the product is isolated as its sodium salt. When dyed or printed on cotton and other fibres it gives yellow shades, which are converted into the reddish-blue shade of dibenzanthrone by hydrolysis and oxidation, for example, by treatment with acid sodium nitrite. It may be converted in substance into dibenzanthrone by means of acid oxidizing-agents. Specifications 286,057, 247,787, 251,491 and 261,139 are referred to.
