Abstract
The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes how vat dyes of the dibenzanthrone series may be obtained by converting dihydroxydibenzanthrone into its alkali metal salt, drying, and etherifying the product, e.g. with an alkylating agent, preferably in an inert medium. The alkali metal salts may be obtained by treatment with sodium carbonate, metallic sodium, or by vatting, but the use of caustic soda is to be avoided on account of the subsequent drying process. According to examples, dihydroxydibenzanthrone obtained by oxidation of dibenzanthrone and partial reduction with sodium bisulphite in dilute sulphuric acid, is converted to the sodium salt by means of soda ash, salting, or metallic sodium, and after drying is etherified with ethylene dibromide (see U.S.A. Specification 1,761,624), p-toluene sulphonic isopropyl ester, diphenyl dichloromethane, or benzylidene chloride. The products dye fast shades of red to blue. British Specification 181,304, [Class 2 (iii)], also is referred to.
