Abstract
Mineral and tar oils and waxes are purified in the usual manner while dissolved in decahydronaphthalene. For example, 100 kgs. of viscous mineral oil is dissolved in 100 litres of decahydronaphthalene, and treated at 25-30 DEG C. with 200 kgs. of 98 per cent sulphuric acid. After settling and separating the solution is neutralized by alkaline lye and decolorized by fuller's earth. The solvent is removed by distillation, preferably in vacuo or with steam. Sulphuric acid of any degree of concentration or oleum of 25-30 per cent SO3 content may be used.
