Abstract
Sulphonation products are prepared from mineral or tar oils containing over 2 per cent of sulphur, by submitting the oils to a preliminary refining to remove the substances which produce a dark colour on sulphonation without removing the sulphur compounds. The refining is effected by treatment with soda lye followed by sulphuric acid of strength below 80 per cent and preferably of 70 per cent strength or with potash lye, aluminium chloride phosphoric acid or fuller's earth. The sulphonation is effected during cooling or with sulphuric acid of about 80 per cent strength, or in presence of a diluent which may be residual oil incapable of sulphonation. The sulphonation may be effected in stages with sulphuric acid of strength increasing to that of fuming sulphuric acid.ALSO:Mineral or tar oils containing more than 2 per cent of sulphur are submitted to a preliminary refining, prior to sulphonation, in order to remove the substances which produce a dark colour on sulphonation without removing the sulphur compounds. The refining is effected by treatment with soda lye followed by sulphuric acid of strength below 80 per cent and preferably 70 per cent strength or with potash lye, aluminium chloride or fuller's earth.
