Abstract
White oil is prepared by first treating mineral oil to form, neutralize, and remove sulphonic acids, and then mixing the treated oil with a minor proportion of water and sulphur trioxide to form an acid containing 60-80 wt. per cent of free SO3. The oil may be treated in the first stage with oleum containing, for example, 20-30 per cent SO3, or with liquid or gaseous sulphur trioxide. The sulphonic acids may be separated from the oil by settling or centrifuging and the oil then neutralized with caustic soda or sodium carbonate and the soaps formed extracted with alcohol, e.g. isopropyl alcohol. In the final acid treatment the water and SO3 may be used in proportions which would form an acid present in a proportion of 8-15 per cent by weight. Both acid treatments may be carried out in more than one stage. The refined oil may finally be clay filtered. Petroleum distillates, e.g. lubricating oils boiling at 600-1000 DEG F., may be treated; these lubricating oils may be solvent extracted and clay treated.
