Abstract

Insulating-oils are obtained by refining mineral oils with a mixture of about 85lb. of sulphuric acid with 15lb. of phosphoric acid. Treatment with alkali and fuller's earth may follow. For example, 5lb. of acid mixture is gradually stirred into 46 gallons of crude mineral oil, the temperature being kept below 25 DEG C., the mixture is allowed to stand until the sludge settles, and the oil is run off, washed with water or 3 per cent caustic soda, dried, and treated with fuller's earth. Refining of mineral oils by sulphuric acid mixed with boric or phosphoric acid is referred to.
