Abstract

Motor spirit is obtained by treating crude petroleum oil with a mixture of potassium bichromate and sulphuric acid in presence of activated carbon, settling, separating the supernatant liquid, and, preferably after neutralizing, adding a combustion assistant. For example, 100 lb. of oil, 0,1 lb. of activated carbon, and 2 lb. of the chromate and acid mixture are stirred together at atmospheric temperature, and allowed to stand for 24 hours; the supernatant liquid is separated, neutralized by caustic alkali, washed, stood for 24 hours, dehydrated by calcium chloride, and mixed with 25 lb. of dehydrated alcohol and 1 lb. of a solution of acetylene in acetone.
