Abstract
Carbon disulphide is removed from benzole or other impure hydrocarbon liquid by extracting with dimethylamine, mixed, if desired, with a strong alkali such as caustic soda, caustic potash or lime. The carbon disulphide is thus converted to a dithiocarbamate more soluble in water than in the hydrocarbon. The dithiocarbamate may therefore be separated, decomposed with acid, the carbon disulphide distilled off and the dimethylamine recovered by distilling the residue with alkali. In examples, benzole is agitated with aqueous dimethylamine with or without caustic soda, and the bottom layer of dithiocarbamate solution is drawn off and acidified with sulphuric acid. Carbon disulphide is distilled off and the residue distilled with caustic soda or lime to recover the dimethylamine. Specifications 2149/12, [Class 2 (iii)], and 467,581 are referred to.
