Abstract
Naphthenic acid materials are purified by forming soaps from the naphthenic acids, mixing the naphthenic soaps in the presence of water with a low-boiling oxygen-containing organic compound miscible with water, removing the separated foreign matter, and, if desired, recovering the oxygen-containing compound from the aqueous solution of naphthenic soaps which solution may finally be acidified. The "low-boiling" compounds have a boiling-point below or not considerably above that of water. In the examples: (a) crude naphthenic acid is neutralized with caustic soda and the mixture is dissolved in water; methanol is added and the clear naphthenate solution is separated; the methanol is distilled off and naphthenic acid is obtained by acidification of the naphthenate with sulphuric acid; and (b) crude naphthenic acid is purified as in (a) using (i) dioxane instead of methyl alcohol as solvent and (ii) acetone as solvent.
