Abstract
A step in the purification of benzyl cellulose comprises incorporating with the crude benzyl cellulose a water-soluble wetting agent of the high-molecular sulphonic acid or sulphonated oil type. This treatment may be followed by washing with water and, if desired, an organic solvent, a suitable organic solvent being one which has no coagulating and little or no swelling action on the cellulose ether, for example, mixture of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. In examples, (1) benzyl cellulose is incorporated with Turkey red oil and the mixture stirred with water, (2) the product of example (1) is washed with a mixture containing toluene and white spirits, (3) benzyl cellulose reaction mass is incorporated with Turkey red oil, washed firstly with a mixture containing toluene and petroleum ether, and then with water.
