Abstract

Sulphur containing gasoline and kerosine petroleum distillates boiling up to 300 DEG C. are purified by washing with sulphuric acid and caustic alkali, and then treating in the absence of air and moisture with particles of sodium of 2-20 microns diameter. The sodium may be in the form of a fine dispersion in oil, e.g. spindle oil, or may be introduced directly into the distillate and dispersed therein by a circulating pump. The distillate may be treated with sodium at a temperature near the initial boiling point of the distillate and at atmosphere or increased pressure. The treatment of white spirit of boiling range 140-190 DEG C. is described.
